I read an article in the Sunday Times this week about a new wave of entrepreneurs who are building their new businesses from 5-9pm in the evening once they get in from their day job.
The newspaper commented that traditionally people would often leave their jobs to start their businesses but now they are staying on and starting their business in their ’spare time’. I don’t really agree with that; I know many small business owners who started part time until their new business felt secure enough to take the plunge and leave the day job. I started my first business part time and then got pregnant and didn’t return to the day job after maternity leave, and in my experience there are many women who actually start a business whilst on maternity leave so that they don’t have to go back to their original job.
One of the drivers is Technology and the Web
One of the drivers for this increase in such enterprises according to the Times is obviously the current climate and people wanting to give themselves a more secure future but they also mention the potential offered by new technology and that I would agree with whole heartedly. Many of the new enterprises are internet based; many of them being set up and managed by the entrepreneur themselves using flexibile easy to use search engine friendly content management systems like WordPress, which is what we recommend.
Do you want your own WordPress website and/or blog?
If you are interested in putting together your own WordPress website then you might want to have a look at our How to Get Online page, which has details of the services that we offer. Our main focus is on teaching and coaching small business owners to set up and manage their own website rather than doing it for you. That gives you much more flexibility as you move your business forwards (and it’s much cheaper!).
What about an email newsletter business?
So, if you haven’t got a business and you want one and you’d really like to do something on the internet – what can you do? A local friend of ours who is a successful internet marketer has just launched a programme explaining how he makes a very comfortable living publishing a bi-weekly (twice a week in this case and not every two weeks!) newsletter to his ever growing emailing list. I have been getting his newsletter for months now and his is one of the few that I read as soon as I get it (and I would read it even if I didn’t know him), so he is definitely getting it right.
Is that something you could do in your niche / area of expertise? It’s a very low cost start up and definitely something you could do alongside a full time job, or children. I’m about halfway through the videos now and although I have produced various email newsletters over the last four years – mostly successful – I am learning some stuff. If you’d like to find out more then you can here – Newsletter Success Formula.
Now is as good time as any to start your own business contrary to popular belief; there is a statistic about more millionaires being created in the depression in the 30s than at any other time, or something like that – I forget the details but that is the gist of it!
