Jo Dodds started her first business, The Hythe Handbook, in August 2005 as a sole trader. Without any previous experience in marketing she quickly grew the business through networking and using other ways of attracting customers like email marketing, advertising and a referral programme.
With her husband, Simon, she started a networking group, Counterpoint Networking, in February 2007, figuring that this would be one way of guaranteeing the best networking opportunities – by running it themselves!
“The idea for Counterpoint Matters came about at the beginning of 2009. Most small business owners are starting to realise that they need a web presence. For those that don’t, believe us, you do! What we have found though is that many web designers are great at designing great looking websites but they often aren’t so good at the actual marketing side of things, which is what is really important.
So many small business websites don’t work and the business owners think, as a result, that the internet doesn’t work for them, which is frustrating as local search is so important nowadays. Most small business owners can get a website to list on the first page of Google without too much trouble as there is still so little local competition. In fact many of our Counterpoint Networking members are finding that their business is listing higher up on Google from an entry on our website than it is from their own!
As small business owners who also specialise in online marketing we have the knowledge and expertise to help small business owners to really get the most from their internet presence, whether that be through helping them to set up their own search engine friendly website and/or blog, improving their website’s SEO or using Social Media like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.”
